From a Dr. Berkowsky talk on Focus On Nutrition about Premium Nutrition BioLife C™ our multi-complex vitamin C formula.

Dr. Berkowsky says:

I'm going to be discussing vitamin C. We may think we really know a lot about vitamin C. It helps me prevent colds or I take it whenever I have a cold or enhances my resistance to illness. Actually, that information is absolutely true. And that information has been available to the public for many years going back to the 1960s. But today, I'd like to give you some more information beyond that, although I will reference that every once in a while.

Vitamin C For More Than Colds

Vitamin C

I want to give a much broader understanding of the importance of vitamin C, not just because there have been so many other nutrients and supplements of various kinds that have been developed since the early days when vitamin C was one of the the premier supplements. It does not mean that vitamin C is any less important than it was back then. It's every bit as important and it should be part of anybody's supplement protocol.

The health benefits of vitamin C, as we all know it has to do with the prevention of colds. I'm going to return to this part, the first thing scientists knew about vitamin C was the deficiency disease called Scurvy.

Here are a few other things you should know about vitamin C. When I mention any type of disorder, you should understand that it's not for treating this disorder, is for the prevention of the disorder.

Dr. Berkowsky Continues

In other words, if you have sufficient vitamin C in the body, then that disorder is less likely to occur. If you do not have enough, then you are increasing the risk of that disorder. If you develop that disorder, then it has to be treated in various ways by doctors and so forth. But you should make up whatever shortfalls you have on the nutrient side as well.

Blood Pressure

Here are a few other things that you should know about. In addition to boosting the immune system, vitamin C helps prevent hypertension. Hypertension is high blood pressure.

It delays or prevents the development of cataracts, which is a filmy growth over the lens of the eye.

Vitamin C, when it is deficient, increases your risk of stroke.

Elasticity Of Skin Sagging Wrinkles

On a much less serious level when vitamin C is deficient, if you do not have enough vitamin C, you have decreased elasticity of the skin. So those of you who are saying, well, gosh, you know, my skin is sagging and I'm developing wrinkles and so forth. Vitamin C plays a role in that as well, if you do not have enough.

Proper Wound healing

Vitamin C is necessary for proper wound healing in the body. Let's say you have a wound of some sort. You cut yourself and it's been a week and you still have the band-aid on and it still doesn't seem to be going away. That's slow wound healing. Vitamin C can be part of that picture as well. Vitamin C plays a role in the increased risk of asthma.

Bad Cholesterol & Vitamin C

Vitamin C also plays a role in making sure you don't develop the so-called, quote-unquote, bad cholesterol, LDL cholesterol. Low vitamin C levels correlate with higher levels of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of triglycerides.

Vitamin C Helps Utilize Iron

Vitamin C is also necessary for the utilization of other nutrients as well. Let's say, for instance, you want to build up your iron levels in the body. Your red blood cell count is not what it should be, your hemoglobin is low. You want to build that up. Well, you can get iron from food. There are various sources, very rich sources of food that you can get your iron from. Let's say eggs, egg yolks is a good example of that, for instance. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron. You can actually have as much iron in your diet as you want, but if you're deficient in vitamin C, the iron is not going to be utilized.

Vitamin C Helps Zinc Absorb

There's another important nutrient that has exactly the same situation going on, and that's zinc. For instance, if you're using our Premium Nutrition Zinc Plus™, which I consider to be a very, very high-quality zinc product for whatever the reasons that you're using zinc, it's always a good idea to use the zinc with BioLife C™, because it will increase the utilization of that zinc.

Aging Increases Need

What is one thing that is going to increase your need for vitamin C beyond what you would normally need? Well, the first thing is aging. As you age, as you get older, your need for vitamin C increases.

BioLife C Best Formulation

Today we are going to be discussing Premium Nutrition BioLife C™, a very different type of supplemental vitamin C. It's not just a matter of, well, let's go to the store and let's see what's on the shelf and let's get any vitamin C.

There are major differences. BioLife C™ is a very special vitamin C for several reasons.

One, because the vitamin C in it is highly absorbable.

Two, because it's non-acidic, it's neutral, alkaline neutral, and has no acidity to it. And that's very important for many people who have stomach problems or irritable bowel syndrome, acidic vitamin C is very, very difficult. It is much more of a vitamin C formula. I consider this also a mineral formula as well.

Third, it's also a full potency bioflavonoid formula.

It is primarily a vitamin C formula. Most of what's in there is vitamin C, but in a form that's readily usable by the body. It provides major minerals to the body, including magnesium and potassium. It provides very important bioflavonoids and I do mean very important at that as well.

Stimulates White Blood Cells Interferons Antibodies

Vitamin C stimulates the production of white blood cells, the infection fighters in your body. It stimulates the production of a chemical in the body and an immunological chemical in the body called interferons, which is necessary for your body to fight off all types of invaders into the body, including viruses, it stimulates in the body antibodies.

White Blood Cells Make Viral Antibodies

Antibodies are chemicals produced by white blood cells that fight off certain things. And one of the things that vitamin C produces in terms of antibodies or stimulates the production of terms of the white cells, white blood cells making antibodies are viral antibodies.

The body making white blood cells which make viral antibodies is one of the reasons why vitamin C helps prevent or shorten colds, because colds, the common cold is a viral infection.

Stimulates Liver Detoxifying Enzymes

Vitamin C also stimulates the production of liver detoxifying enzymes. All these things you take into your body that are not good for you, things that you eat, processed foods that are not good for you. Drugs that you're prescribed that you are told you need to take and have to take and so forth.

All these things leave their chemicals behind, the liver has to break down those metabolites, get them ready for excretion, and move them out. Well, if the liver doesn't have the detoxifying enzymes, it requires to break down those drugs and to break them down into metabolites that can be moved out of the body. They'll just stay in the liver. And one of the nutrients that are absolutely crucial for the liver to produce those enzymes to detoxify itself is vitamin C and the plot thickens.
